Kearns Public school welcomes safe and careful road users. The main entrance to the school is on St Lawrence Avenue.
Traffic flow is generally quiet, but becomes busy just prior to and just after school hours.
Naturally, it is at these times when our students are most at risk and it becomes important to exercise great care when travelling within the school zone.
The roadway at the front of the school is either designated as a bus zone or a no stopping zone, making it illegal to stop or park a motor vehicle.
There is a staff car parking area that is accessible from St Lawrence Avenue - this is reserved for school staff and delivery vehicles and is closed to the public. The gate is sign-posted to restrict unauthorised vehicle access. Parents, carers and students are not permitted to use the driveway entrance, nor are they allowed to enter this car park. The pedestrian crossing on St Lawrence Ave is operational during school hours and is marked with flags that staff put in place before school, and remove after school.
The school also borders Epping Forest Drive where the speed of cars from two blind spots on the northern and southern ends is a significant issue. There are two pedestrian access gates on St Lawrence Ave and one on Epping Forest Drive. Two teachers supervise afternoon bus duty (before and after school care buses only) and the exit of students from the school grounds. Neither exit point has a road marked pedestrian crossing. There is no designated pedestrian crossing on Epping Forest Drive.
The majority of students travel to school by car and by foot. Some students are transported by ‘Before and After School Care' buses.
Following discussion with the P & C Association, it has been decided that bicycles, scooters, roller blades and skateboards are not permitted on school grounds. The school does not have the facilities to provide safe storage for bicycles and helmets, and their security and the potential for inappropriate use presents an unacceptable risk.
There is limited parking directly outside the school on St Lawrence Ave.
Road safety education at Kearns Public School is integral to the safety and well-being of our students. A whole-school approach is about our school, parents and carers working together to implement road safety education. It involves integrating the areas of curriculum, policy, ethos and environment and parents and community.
